North girls surge past Terre Haute North
H-T Report
November 16, 2011
TERRE HAUTE — North broke things open with a sharp-shooting second half and
held off Terre Haute North for a 62-50 girls’ basketball victory Tuesday
night.
Shai Warfield’s layup to start the second half gave the Cougars the lead for
good as they outscored the Patriots 24-14 in the third quarter.
“We just said, ‘Brand new ballgame second half,’” North coach Alana
Harrington said. “A key is the first bucket, and we got one immediately on
the layup by Shai.”
The Cougars (2-1) went on to shoot 65 percent in the second half, getting a
couple of 3s to fall along with some high-percentage shots.
“Our shot selection in the second half was nice, and we hit some open 3s,”
Harrington said. “I liked our shot chart, a lot of attempts inside and in
the paint.”
One of the chief recipients of those shots was Dee Shaw, who led North in
scoring with 14 points. Erin Kinzer and Liz DeMoss added 10 points apiece,
while Warfield finished with nine and Josie Staggs eight.
DeMoss also drew the primary defensive assignment on Terre Haute’s Nicole
Anderson with help from reserve 6-footer Brittany Tucker. The Patriots’
6-foot-1 forward posted a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds but had
to earn it. “She still had 19 and 15, but it took her a while,” Harrington
said. “Anderson wore down, and it seemed like in the second half she stopped
looking for herself (offensively).”
Once the Cougars got on top, they never looked back en route to their second
road win in as many tries this season.
“We were pretty much able to keep that lead, able to run some time off the
clock and did a nice job taking advantage of opportunities when we had
them,” Harrington said.

North girls hold off Clay City in opener
H-T Report
November 9, 2011
CLAY CITY — North saw its eight-point lead disappear before senior Dee Shaw
snapped the tie on a stickback with a minute and a half left to put the
Cougars back on track for a 43-38 win over Clay City in a girls’ basketball
season opener Tuesday night.
Liz DeMoss, who led North with 14 points and eight rebounds, added a couple
of free throws after a miss by the Class 1A No. 8 Eels to help seal up the
win.
“It was a great challenge,” North coach Alana Harrington said. “We knew Clay
City was a good team. Liz had an excellent game. She shot well and played
well on both sides of the floor. Shaw, that was her first start and she came
up big.”
Shai Warfield added 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals for the Cougars,
while Shaw grabbed eight boards.
North shot just 31 percent, and was just 15-of-27 at the line, but did hold
Clay City to 7-of-35 shooting and held a 38-29 edge on the glass.
Carmela Roeschlein had 14 points and nine rebounds for Clay City.

Turnovers doom North girls vs. Bull Dogs
Giveaways in fourth quarter help Columbus North bounce Cougars from
sectional, 56-45
By Jeremy Price
February 9, 2011
ST. LEON — There was little to separate the North girls’ basketball from
their Conference Indiana rivals, Columbus North, in Tuesday’s Class 4A
Sectional 14 opener at East Central.
Neither team led by more than six points until the final 86 seconds, but
when the dust cleared the Cougars found themselves on the short end of a
56-45 score, ending the season far too soon for their liking.
“I can’t fault our effort,” North coach Alana Harrington said. “At times I
want to fault our defense, but for our two seniors (Hannah Lukemeyer and
Shaw-Nee Winningham), I’m disappointed they are going out like this.
“You look at our season, and the eight games we lost, including tonight,
were by 11 points or less, so this was a season of competing. I think our
seniors taught us that.”
The two categories that cost the Cougars (15-8) most dearly were turnovers
and free throws. Columbus finished with 15 turnovers to North’s 20, but the
Bull Dogs (18-6) did not have a single giveaway in the fourth quarter, while
the Cougars were guilty of four turnovers in six possessions after the game
was tied at 40 with 4:30 remaining. That allowed Columbus to go on a 14-2
run to effectively seal the outcome.
The Bull Dogs host East Central in the second semifinal Friday night
following the opener at 6 p.m. between South and Columbus East.
“We talked about that at halftime, doing a better job taking care of the
ball,” Harrington said. “That’s the bottom line, turnovers.”
Added Columbus North coach Pat McKee: “(Our pressure) started to wear them
down and in the fourth quarter probably wore them down a teeny bit more.
They were going quicker than they wanted, and we were able to avoid the
turnovers.”
Those mistakes, combined with the Bull Dogs outscoring the Cougars 20-4 at
the free-throw line, helped negate the fact that North shot 50 percent from
the field for the game, including 7-of-14 on 3-pointers.
Columbus went 20-of-23 on free throws, 11-of-12 in the fourth quarter. It
didn’t hurt that Miami (Ohio) recruit Courtney Larson was at the line for
most of those, hitting 8-of-8 in the quarter and 10-of-10 for the game en
route to 20 points.
Harrington was disappointed her squad wasn’t able to create more free-throw
opportunities after a 4-of-6 effort.
“We talk about that every game to attack and get to the free-throw line,”
she said. “I always want us to be more aggressive. We had that opportunity.
Yeah, we needed to attack more.”
Winningham did most of the attacking for the Cougars in the first half as
Shai Warfield and Lukemeyer sat most of the second quarter with two fouls
apiece. When Winningham grabbed a rebound and dashed coast-to-coast for a
layup at the 3:27 mark of the second quarter, North had its biggest lead of
the game at 16-12. The Cougar senior had eight points and nine rebounds in
the first half on her way to a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
“Shaw-Nee with a double-double tonight showed what she’s capable of doing
any given night,” Harrington said. “She wanted the ball.”
But a minute later point guard Erin Kinzer (11 points) picked up her third
foul, and Columbus took advantage by forcing four turnovers to spark a 9-3
run. Larson capped the half with a baseline jumper just before the buzzer to
put the Bull Dogs up 21-19.
The game see-sawed back and forth in the third quarter, but Columbus took a
36-30 lead to the final quarter, its largest lead to that point.
North battled back one more time, tying the game at 40 on a 3 by Warfield,
who scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. But then the turnovers
and free throws finally caught up with the Cougars, who could not muster
another run to Harrington’s chagrin.
“We had to bring our ‘A’ game, and we brought our ‘B-plus’ game,” she said.

Columbus North outlasts ailing Cougars
H-T Report
January 30, 2011
COLUMBUS — Columbus North used a 14-3 spurt in the third quarter to grab the
lead and hang on for a 42-37 Conference Indiana victory over North Saturday.
The shorthanded Cougars (15-6, 4-3), playing without starter Shaw-Nee
Winningham and reserve Steffanie Nelson, bounced back from a sluggish start.
Trailing 5-2 after one quarter, North took an 18-16 halftime lead.
Then Columbus’ Courtney Larson, who had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four
blocks, got loose to pull the Bull Dogs (16-6, 6-1) back out front.
“I just thought when we came out our defensive effort was lacking,” North
coach Alana Harrington said. “But we did battle back and tied it several
times. It’s tough here. Columbus North is having a great year, and Larson is
a tough player. You’ve got to limit her touches, and I think we did that in
the first half. The second, she attacked more and got on the glass, so
credit her.”
Columbus hit 13 of 16 free throws to overcome 26 percent shooting. North
shot 34 percent and got 11 points and nine rebounds from Hannah Lukemeyer.
Dee Shaw had five points and six boards off the bench, while Josie Staggs
added a career-high six points.
“We got some kids playing time they don’t normally get,” Harrington said.
“Grace Luce started and stepped up. Staggs turned an ankle on Thursday and
played a lot of minutes. Shaw also played some big minutes. We gave them an
opportunity and they did a nice job.”

Cougars rally for tough road win at BNL
By Jeff Bartlett Bedford Times-Mail
January 28, 2011
BEDFORD — Bedford North Lawrence had victory in hand on a couple of
occasions Thursday night, but North refused to hand it over as the Cougars
clawed back from a seven-point deficit in the final four minutes to pull out
a 53-48 girls basketball victory at BNL Fieldhouse.
North ultimately got it done by routing BNL, 29-17, on the boards (despite
having starting forward Shaw-Nee Winningham out with the flu) and also
outscoring the Lady Stars, 15-8, from the free throw line.
“This is a very nice win,” said North coach Alana Harrington. “They all are,
but this is a very tough place to play. You know they’re going to be
well-coached and play hard.
“There were some tough battles going out there tonight, and I really thought
it would come down to toughness, especially on the boards.
“We did a great job there, and I thought Grace Luce really stepped up for
Shaw-Nee, and Erin (Kinzer) and Shai (Warfield) were tough all night.”
North led at every stop through three quarters, but BNL surged early in the
fourth to make a bold move toward its 13th win. The Lady Stars awakened in
the final eight minutes as Leah Myers grabbed an offensive carom and, in one
motion, zipped a pass to Kidd for a layup. Brittani Rizzi followed with a
3-pointer, and then drained a pair of free throws to give the Lady Stars a
38-32 lead with 6:10 to play.
BNL bumped it up to 40-33 on a 17-footer from Alli Matlock and it forced
Harrington to use a timeout.
The Lady Stars had two great chances to expand the lead, but missed a
3-pointer and threw the ball away. It opened the gate for a big North run as
a halfcourt trap forced a slew of BNL miscues and created a 9-0 burst. Luce
had five points in the spree as the Cougars rallied for a 42-40 lead with
3:09 to go.
“We have to rely on our defense to generate offense for us, and that’s what
happened there,” Harrington said. “We forced some turnovers and got points
off them.”
BNL coach Kurt Godlevske saw his offense go stagnant under pressure. The
Lady Stars had just five turnovers going into the fourth quarter, but
finished with 11.
“Whether you’re facing fullcourt or halfcourt pressure, you have to move the
ball,” he said. “We got too stationary at the point and stopped moving the
ball and stopped attacking the basket, which allowed them to force
turnovers.”
The Lady Stars showed more resolve as they clawed back for a 45-42 lead on a
3-pointer by Kidd, and a driving layup by Myers. But BNL disintegrated in
the final two minutes.
The defense allowed a layup by Hannah Lukemeyer, but BNL still had the ball
and the lead as the clocked ticked under two minutes. Kidd found herself
alone deep in the right corner, and couldn’t resist firing an ill-advised
3-point attempt.
It caromed long, and the Cougars rushed to the other end where Grace Luce,
who led North with 14 points, buried a huge trey from the top of the key
with 1:06 showing.
Harrington was pleased to see BNL put up a shot in that situation.
“I was happy, actually,” she said. “It certainly altered what I was thinking
my strategy might have to be right there.”
Following Luce’s 3, the Lady Stars tried to hurry and counter, but committed
another turnover, and Erin Kinzer was fouled. She converted both ends of a
bonus for a 49-45 advantage with :43.7 left, and the Cougars were able to
make it hold up, snapping a two-game skid while improving to 15-5.

Pike hits 10 3s in 49-47 win over North girls
By Jim Gordillo
January 22, 2011
It was a night for the unusual, which is not what North wanted.
So even as it was holding Pike under 50 points, it was also watching the Red
Devils can 10 of 20 mostly uncontested 3-pointers.
And with overtime in its sights on Senior Night, reliable senior Shaw-Nee
Winningham put her team in that position only to miss a layup with five
seconds left in a heartbreaking 49-47 Conference Indiana loss Friday.
“We’ve lost eight games by five points or less, so we needed one to bounce
our way,” Pike coach Robert Angelea said.
North (14-5, 4-2), which has dropped three of its last four, rallied from a
10-point deficit only to fall after neither team scored in the final 2:10.
“We got an opportunity,” North coach Alana Harrington said. “We battled
really well and had an opportunity to tie it at the end. We got it to
Shaw-Nee, and she made a hell of a move and nine times out of 10, she
finishes. We’re disappointed in losing, especially for the seniors.”
Erin Kinzer’s third 3 of the game with 4:10 to play gave her a team-high 14
points and the Cougars their first lead (45-44) since Shai Warfield took the
opening tap in for a layup.
Pike answered at 3:48 with a post move by Jailyn Henderson, then Winningham
(six points, five assists, four steals, four rebounds) picked the point
guard’s pocket for an easy score with 2:45 left and a 47-46 lead.
But North’s defense made it’s final fatal mistake, leaving Jazmine Smith
wide open on the right wing. Smith, who was 4-of-6 from the arc, swished it
with 2:10 to play.
Warfield rimmed out a layup off an inbounds pass at 1:20, but North trapped
at the other end and Hannah Lukemeyer came up with a steal, Pike’s 11th
turnover of the second half, with just under a minute left.
“We made some unforced turnovers, that helped put them in a better
position,” Angelea said.
But Winningham was called for charging with 21 seconds to play and North
fouled Smith with 12.9 left. She missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and
Lukemeyer grabbed the rebound and North called timeout.
Winningham got the ball just over the half-court line right of the basket.
The lefthander crossed court and made a strong move to the hoop, but seemed
to lose control of the ball at the last second and shot too hard. Pike
gained possession after a jumpball and ran out the clock.
“We showed some toughness,” Harrington said. “We battled back to get the
lead. It’s game of runs and they key was to answer.”
But North just didn’t have enough to answer Pike’s 30-16 rebounding edge and
season-high 10 3s as Asia Coates hit 3 of 5 to score 14 points and three
more came off the bench.
“I felt like if they played zone, we’d play some people we don’t normally
play so early,” Angelea said. “They’re not as good defensively, but they’re
good shooters.”
“We tried our 2-3 zone, we tried a 1-3-1, we tried our man, we tried
pressing,” Harrington said. “Credit to them for shooting lights out. They
were coming off a good game against Decatur (Central) and it carried over.
The second half, we contested them a little more.”
Pike was 7-of-14 from the arc in the first half while building up a 29-21
edge, but got sloppy after going up 35-25 at 5:40 of the third. Then North
went on an 8-0 run to begin its comeback, but the Red Devils (6-11, 2-4)
hung on.
“Pike is not the team their record says they are,” Harrington said.

No. 7 Mooresville bounces over North girls
By Jeremy Price
January 19, 2011
There were plenty of ugly numbers in the wake of Mooresville’s 45-38 victory
over North Tuesday night at the Cougar Den.
But there was just one category that stuck in North coach Alana Harrington’s
craw — offensive rebounds.
The Cougars gave up 17 offensive rebounds to the Class 4A No. 7 Pioneers,
and that, coupled with a 13-1 Mooresville run to start the game, left North
looking up all game long.
“The bottom line is if you give up 17 offensive rebounds, it’s really
difficult to get out of that hole,” Harrington said. “They’re 14-1, a pretty
good team, and not to take them lightly, but we didn’t make any breaks for
ourselves. Turnovers were pretty even, shooting, we shot awful, but you can’t
give up 17 offensive rebounds and expect to beat a top 10 team.”
Neither team shot the ball well as the Cougars fired away at a 29.8 percent
(14-of-47) clip from the field to Mooresville’s 31 percent (18-of-58). The
Cougars were 9-of-17 on free throws and the Pioneers 7-of-14, while North
hit 1-of-12 3s to Mooresville’s 2-of-15.
But with a 13-1 lead less than four minutes into the game, including two
offensive rebound baskets, the Pioneers had more margin for error the rest
of the way.
“We were really trying to get them to beat us from the outside, (but) they
didn’t have to,” Harrington said. “If you look at their shot opportunities,
they hit two 3-pointers, but it’s all those second opportunities.
“Our interior defense was poor at best, then our rebounding was absolutely
horrendous. It really doesn’t matter what you do offensively, you can’t
trade buckets with them when you put yourself in a hole.”
The Cougars cut the lead to five twice in the second quarter and trailed
just 26-19 at halftime. They closed within five again on Shaw-Nee Winningham’s
putback with 4:30 left in the third quarter, but Mooresville went on an 8-3
runto finish the frame.
Senior standout Jama Sharp, who was held to 15 points on 4-of-17 shooting,
capped things when she lost North freshman Grace Luce around a screen and
buried a 3-pointer from the left wing with less than 30 seconds to go for a
36-26 lead.
“That’s why she’s a Miss Basketball candidate,” Mooresville coach Mark Hurt
said. “She knows what the team needs. We were really struggling a bit in the
third, and her hitting that 3 was a real big lift for our ballclub.”
The closest North could get after that was 39-33 on Winningham’s jumper in
the lane with 3:05 remaining.
Shai Warfield was the lone Cougar in double figures with 11 points, while
Winningham grabbed 10 rebounds and Hannah Lukemeyer nine rebounds.

Cougars’ defense stuffs Franklin Central
H-T Report
January 16, 2011
INDIANAPOLIS — North leaped out to a 27-7 lead by halftime and did it with
defense, as struggling Franklin Central shot just 27 percent in a 56-27 loss
to the Cougars in girls' basketball Saturday.
“Yeah, that’s what we were looking for,” North coach Alana Harrington said.
“I don’t think we had a good defensive presence in the game Thursday.”
Shai Warfield had 20 points and six steals for North (14-3, 4-1) while
Shaw-Nee Winningham added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“Shai had a really nice game for us,” Harrington said. “And Shaw-Nee had a
double-double with no turnovers, so it’s nice to see that.”
North also held a 42-29 edge on the glass. Erin Kinzer had 14 points and
three assists and Liz DeMoss nine points and three steals to round out a
balanced effort.

Cougar girls almost let Bears get away at the end
By Lynn Houser
January 9, 2011
Three exceptional quarters of basketball almost were undone by a single poor
one as the North Cougars held off Lawrence Central, 54-45, Saturday.
The Cougars almost squandered a 17-point lead in the final six minutes
before making their escape. They were able to hang on by virtue of seven
free throws in the last minute.
The two biggest free throws were supplied by junior guard Erin Kinzer with
1:02 left. With the Cougars clinging to a 47-45 lead and Lawrence Central
turning up the heat, Kinzer went strong to the basket and drew a two-shot
foul. She made both to give the Cougars some breathing room.
At the other end, sophomore guard Shai Warfield intercepted a pass and was
fouled. Warfield made both ends of a one-and-one. Two more free throws by
Kinzer with 17 seconds left clinched the Cougars’ third conference win
against one loss.
“I just thought we needed a little pick-me-up,” Kinzer said of her bold move
to the basket. “The lane was semi open and I decided to take it to the hole
maybe draw a foul.”
Kinzer played all but one minute and had a perfect shooting day. She was
3-for-3 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and was 8-for-8 from the
line.
“You don’t see kids shoot 100 percent from the field very often, especially
a kid playing 31 minutes,” North coach Alana Harrington said. “Kinzer has
been a solid point guard for us all year.”
Other Cougars also shot well. Senior forward Shaw-Nee Winningham scored 13
points on 6-for-8 shooting, and Warfield scored 13 points on 3-for-5 from
the field and 6-for-7 from the line.
Forwards Hannah Lukemeyer and Liz Demoss combined for 17 rebounds and nine
points. The Cougars shot 55 percent overall.
For three quarters the Cougars had their way. They led 20-11 after one
quarter, 30-15 after two and 45-28 after three.
But Lawrence Central guard Taylor Sanders went on a personal tear, scoring
12 of her game-high 22 in the fourth quarter, including 10 straight at one
point. Her driving lay-up with 1:31 left pulled the Bears within two, 47-45.
“Kudos to her (Sanders),” Kinzer said. “She hit a couple from way outside.
She was on fire, a big reason they got back into the game.”
“We wanted to make them beat us from outside, and they almost did,”
Harrington said.
The Cougars aided the Lawrence Central cause with turnovers and point-blank
misses.
“We didn’t take care of the ball,” Harrington said. “A lot of those
turnovers were unforced.”
In the end it was the North defense that came to the rescue, stopping the
Bears on their last three possessions.
“Lawrence Central has had some quality wins of late,” Harrington said. “We
knew they wouldn’t quit.”
“Hey, it’s a win, and that’s all we are looking at right now,” Kinzer said.
