MATCHUPS UNVEILED FOR 35TH GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE TOURNAMENT

Ping-pong balls representing 397 different schools were drawn and placed into brackets this evening in downtown Indianapolis in anticipation of the 35th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament which begins one week from tonight.

The 397 teams ties the state tournament record set last year.

Sectional games are scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 8, and run through Saturday, Feb. 13, with the regional round slated for Feb. 20 and semi-states on Feb. 27. This year’s state finals will be played Saturday, March 6, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, site of many past great IHSAA tournament events.

This will be the first time in the history of the girls tournament that the road to a state championship will end in a city other than Indianapolis. The last time a high school basketball state finals was contested outside the capital city was 1974 when Assembly Hall in Bloomington hosted the boys finals.

In Class 4A, defending state champion and top-ranked Ben Davis drew host Indianapolis Manual for its opener in Sectional 12. In 3A, top-ranked Norwell meets Peru in Sectional 22 at Fort Wayne Wayne. Class 2A No. 1 Winchester will face home-standing Lapel in the Sectional 41 opener. Vincennes Rivet, No. 1 in Class A, will meet North Daviess in Sectional 63 at Loogootee.

Among the other defending state champions, Class A’s two-time winner Fort Wayne Canterbury will take on Elkhart Christian in Sectional 51 at Hamilton. Four-time Class 2A winner Heritage Christian will face Indian Creek on its own floor in the first round of Sectional 43 and, in 3A, Fort Wayne Elmhurst drew the bye and will meet the Norwell-Peru winner in Sectional 22 semifinals at Fort Wayne Wayne.

Two schools, both in Class A, will be making their first appearance in the girls state tournament. Covenant Christian of DeMotte is assigned to Sectional 52 at Caston, while Irvington Preparatory Academy will be playing in Sectional 58 at Southwestern (Shelbyville).

Heritage Christian and Class A’s Northeast Dubois lead the state with seven consecutive sectional championships.
